Carol & Ron back at their best....

Carol, Ron and the band are only three dates into the #TPau25 Tour and it's going better than they could ever have hoped for!!  They are very touched by all the support.

"I'm Here!"  Carol outside The Grand Pavilion
Porthcawl on the 3rd gig on 18/04/13

It's 25 years ago that T'Pau made it big, which is an understatement, on to the music scene.  But it wasn't over here they made it big first!!  It was America.

Heart and Soul entered the UK charts at number 98 and then disappeared without a trace.  The band must have thought it was all over before it begun!!

Luck was on their side, however, as Heart and Soul started to climb up the American Billboard charts!!  Before Carol and co. knew where they were, the song had peeked at number 4, and was in the charts for 6 months, going up and down like a yo-yo!!

It must have been weird being 'big' in America, but nobody knowing who you were in your own country.  That was soon to change....

As luck had it, Heart and Soul re-entered the UK charts and started to climb.  Ironically, the song peaked at number 4 over here too!!  This meant the band were on flights to and from America promoting the song, and even Europe was picking up on the song too!!

One thing a lot of people don't know is that Heart and Soul went to number 1 in Canada and was in their charts for 25 weeks!!

Here is the 'original' video to Heart and Soul that many of you may not have seen.  This version has more focus on the band 'on stage' and Carol dancing.

I think what attracted people to the track was the fact that it had overlapping lyrics, one of which being rap,  making it catchy, dancy and unusual at the same time.  To this day, the song still sounds 'cool' and 'fresh' 25 years on and it wouldn't appear out of place in the charts today.  It just hasn't aged!!

T'Pau had stamped their mark firmly on the map but the best was yet to come!!

It's hard to imagine China In Your Hand wasn't even going to be on the album 'Bridge of Spies'.
T'Pau got their record deal on songs such as 'Heart and Soul', 'Valentine', 'Sex Talk' and 'Monkey House'.

One track wasn't working on the album and far too much time had been spent on it, so Carol was asked if she had another song.  As if by pure fate, Carol put her hands in her pocket and pulled out the demo of 'China In Your hand' and said "well, I've got this?"  If it wasn't for that one track not working, 'China' May never have seen the light of day!!

It hit that top spot in 1987 and stayed there for 5 weeks, being the longest serving number 1 of the year.  It was also the 600th number 1, and for 2 of the 5 weeks, the quadruple platinum selling album 'Bridge of Spies' was number 1 simultaneously, something not achieved by many!!

The band also kept 2 Beatles off the top of the charts :

  • George Harrison 's single 'Got My Mind Set On You' was beaten to number 1 by 'China'
  • Paul McCartney's album 'All The Best' was beaten to number 1 by 'Bridge of Spies'

Bridge of Spies

The #TPau25 Tour is celebrating 25 years since the quadruple platinum selling album 'Bridge of Spies' was released.

Did you know that one in ten homes had a copy of Bridge of Spies!!  That's a lot of records sold!!

As I have said, the band have only done 3 of the 27 gigs, so far, but the impact these 3 gigs have had on people is such a positive one.  And so many people are saying Carol is looking and sounding better than ever!!

Take a look at the following 2 You Tube videos :

#T'Pau25 gigs in South Wales; Newport & Porthcawl

Don't they sound great!!

We knew when the tour was announced that Ron was going to do maybe half a dozen of the gigs, but this was subsequently changed to 'all' of the gigs to the delight of the fans!!

We had the original co-founders and co-writers of the band together performing a full set together for the first time in over 20 years!!

Isn't it great seeing Carol and Ron on the same stage!!

Carol with fans

Ron signing for fans

This couldn't possibly be a certain Mr Tim Burgess could it?!
There was talk of Universal Records releasing a package to coincide with the 25th year anniversary that all T'Pau fans could 'treasure'.  A deluxe edition of Bridge Of Spies at the very least.  However, this, unfortunately, was not to happen.

The Story Behind The Tracks

Carol and Ron decided to put something out under Carol's Record Label, Gnatfish Records.

The CD/DVD package titled 'The Story Behind The Tracks' was born.

The CD includes all 10 songs from 'Bridge of Spies' in demo form, plus 6 songs, previously unheard, which didn't make the final cut on the album.  There are 2 other songs, 'Taking Time Out' which was to appear on the band's second album 'Rage' and 'Don't Give It Up' which was a B-Side to 'Road To Our Dream', but was called 'Time Of Our Lives'.

Rare footage is included in a documentary DVD with up-to-date interviews with Carol Decker and Ron Rogers as they describe life in T'Pau in the early days and re-visit the journey that took them to international success.

You can either purchase this at a #TPau25 gig, or online at Carol's label, Gnatfish Records.
